Some people think that having a set retirement age for everybody is unfair. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

有人认为为所有人设定统一退休年龄是不公平的。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 6 model answer

In most countries, there is an official age when people must stop working and retire. Some people think that having the same retirement age for everybody is not fair. I mostly agree with this opinion, because people are very different from each other.

There are strong reasons to agree that a fixed retirement age is unfair. Firstly, people do different types of jobs. A worker who does hard physical work, like in a factory or on a building site, becomes tired and weak earlier, so for him it is fair to retire sooner. But a person who works in a comfortable office is not so tired, and maybe he still wants to work after the official age. Secondly, people have different health. Some old people are still strong and full of energy, and if they are forced to stop, the country loses their experience and skills.

However, I understand why some people support a fixed age. It makes the system simple and equal for everyone, and it also creates job opportunities for young people, because when the old workers leave, new workers can enter the company.

In my opinion, a fixed retirement age is not the best solution, because it does not respect the differences between people. It would be more fair to have a flexible system, where people can choose to retire earlier or later depending on their health and their type of work. In conclusion, I agree that a single retirement age for everybody is unfair, and a more flexible system would be better for both the workers and the country.
