Band 6 model answer

Nowadays, plastic bags, bottles and packaging are used everywhere, and they cause a lot of damage to the environment. In this essay I will explain the problems that plastic causes and suggest some measures to solve them.

Plastic creates several serious problems. Firstly, plastic does not break down easily, so it stays in the environment for hundreds of years. Much of this plastic ends up in the rivers and the oceans, where it harms fish, birds and other animals that eat it or get trapped in it. Secondly, when people burn plastic waste, it produces toxic gases that pollute the air and are bad for our health. In addition, producing plastic uses a lot of oil and energy, which also damages the planet. Plastic waste can also block the drains in cities, which sometimes causes floods and dirty streets.

Fortunately, there are some measures that can solve these problems. Firstly, governments can ban single-use plastic bags or make people pay for them, so people use fewer of them and bring their own bags. Secondly, companies should use materials that can be recycled or that break down naturally, instead of normal plastic. Furthermore, governments should build better recycling systems and teach people to recycle correctly. Schools can also teach children from a young age to reduce and reuse plastic in their daily life.

In conclusion, plastic bags, bottles and packaging harm the environment because they cause pollution and kill wildlife. However, with government bans, better materials and stronger recycling, I believe we can reduce this problem and protect nature for the next generations.
