Writing Task 2 prompt

In many countries, families are becoming smaller. Is this a positive or negative development?

许多国家的家庭规模正在变小。这是积极还是消极的发展?

Band 6 model answer

In many countries, families are becoming smaller than before. In the past, families often had many children, but now most families have only one or two. In my opinion, this is mostly a positive development, although it also has some negative sides.

There are several reasons why smaller families are a good thing. Firstly, when there are fewer children, the parents can give more time, attention and money to each child. This means the children can receive a better education and better health care, which is good for their future. Secondly, smaller families are also better for the environment and the economy, because a smaller population uses fewer natural resources. In addition, women have more freedom, because they do not spend all their life taking care of many children, so they can work and follow their own goals.

However, there are also some negative sides. When a country has fewer children, the population becomes older, and in the future there may not be enough young workers to support the old people. Some children in small families can also feel lonely because they do not have brothers or sisters. Without siblings, a few of them may also become a little selfish, because they are used to getting all the attention.

In my opinion, the advantages of smaller families are bigger than the disadvantages, because the quality of life for each child and each parent improves. In conclusion, although smaller families create some problems for the future, I believe this is generally a positive development for both the family and the society.
