Band 8 model answer

The abrupt shift to remote working in recent years has left a lasting mark on the modern workplace and divided opinion about its merits. Some maintain that it serves the interests of employees and employers equally, while others insist that it erodes productivity and teamwork. In my view, its success depends far more on how it is implemented than on the arrangement itself.

The advantages are substantial and well documented. Freed from a daily commute, employees reclaim time and money and gain the flexibility to reconcile work with family life, which tends to raise both morale and loyalty. Employers, meanwhile, can trim expenditure on office space and recruit talent regardless of geography. Where staff feel trusted rather than closely monitored, autonomy frequently translates into higher, not lower, output.

Yet the reservations of critics are equally credible. The home is replete with distractions, and the vanishing boundary between professional and personal life can leave employees perpetually half-working and chronically fatigued. More significantly, the informal exchanges that spark innovation and cement relationships are hard to reproduce remotely, and prolonged isolation can corrode the sense of belonging on which effective teams depend. New recruits, in particular, may struggle to learn from colleagues when everyone works apart.

I would argue, therefore, that the debate is wrongly framed as a straight choice. A hybrid model, pairing the concentration and flexibility of home with the collaboration and cohesion of the office, resolves much of the tension. Ultimately, remote work is neither a panacea nor a threat but a tool, and the organisations that thrive will be those that deploy it thoughtfully, according to the demands of the role and the temperament of the individual.
