Band 8 model answer

Adversity is an inescapable feature of human life, yet people meet it in strikingly different ways. Some hold that it is best to accept a bad situation, whereas others maintain that one should always endeavour to improve it. This essay will explore both positions before advancing my own view.

Acceptance undoubtedly has its place. Certain misfortunes lie wholly beyond our influence, the death of someone dear or the onset of an incurable illness among them, and to rage against the immovable is merely to compound suffering with futility. In such circumstances, a measure of acceptance can restore equilibrium, freeing a person from corrosive resentment and enabling them to carry on. Understood this way, acceptance reflects not passivity but a mature recognition of life's limits.

Equally, however, the impulse to improve has driven virtually every advance humanity has made. Were people to acquiesce meekly in every hardship, stagnation would follow. The individual born into poverty may, through determination and learning, remake their prospects entirely, and on a grander scale the rights and liberties now taken for granted were wrested from history by those who flatly refused to accept injustice.

My own conviction is that neither stance is right in isolation; wisdom lies in discernment. We ought to strive with all our energy to change what genuinely can be changed, while cultivating the grace to accept what truly cannot. The decisive faculty, therefore, is the judgement to tell these categories apart, so that we neither squander ourselves on the impossible nor abandon what still lies within our power to better.
