Some people think the best way to solve global environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

有人认为解决全球环境问题的最佳方式是提高燃油价格。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 6 model answer

Environmental problems, such as pollution and climate change, are very serious today. Some people think that the best way to solve these problems is to increase the cost of fuel, for example petrol and diesel. I partly agree with this idea, but I do not think it is the only solution.

There are some good reasons to make fuel more expensive. When petrol costs more, people will use their cars less, and they will choose to walk, cycle or take public transport instead. This can reduce the pollution from cars, which is one of the main causes of air problems in cities. Higher fuel prices can also push companies to use cleaner energy and to make more efficient machines. So this idea can really help the environment.

However, I do not think that increasing fuel prices alone can solve all the problems. Firstly, it is not fair for poor people, because they still need fuel to go to work and to transport goods, but they have less money. Secondly, there are many other causes of environmental damage, such as factories, plastic waste and cutting down forests, and higher fuel prices do not stop these problems.

In my opinion, increasing the cost of fuel can be one useful part of the solution, but the government must also do other things, like building good public transport and using more renewable energy. In conclusion, I partly agree with this idea, but it should be combined with other measures to really protect the environment.
