Band 7 model answer

The natural world faces a host of pressing threats, and there is disagreement about which is the gravest. Some contend that the loss of particular species is the foremost environmental problem, while others believe more significant issues exist. This essay will examine both positions before giving my own view.

Those who emphasise the loss of species make a compelling case. Every organism plays a part in its ecosystem, and the disappearance of even one can disrupt entire food chains and destabilise the delicate balance of nature. The decline of pollinators such as bees, for instance, threatens the crops on which human food supplies depend. Moreover, extinction is irreversible: once a species is gone, it is lost to the planet permanently, representing a unique and unrecoverable impoverishment of life.

On the other hand, many argue that problems such as climate change, air pollution and freshwater scarcity are more urgent still. These directly endanger billions of people and, crucially, are themselves major drivers of species loss. From this standpoint, tackling climate change would simultaneously protect countless species, making it the more effective priority.

In my opinion, while the extinction of species is a genuine tragedy, it is frequently a symptom of these larger problems rather than an isolated one. I therefore believe we should concentrate first on the root causes, chiefly climate change and pollution, since addressing them would benefit humans and wildlife alike. Overall, protecting biodiversity matters greatly, but the central environmental challenge lies in the forces that cause its decline.
