Band 8 model answer

The environment is beset by numerous threats, and opinion is divided over which deserves to be regarded as paramount. Some insist that the loss of particular species constitutes the single most serious problem, whereas others discern more consequential issues. This essay will weigh both perspectives before advancing my own.

The champions of biodiversity argue persuasively. Each organism occupies a specific niche within its ecosystem, and the extinction of even one can unravel entire food webs and upset nature's finely tuned equilibrium; the ongoing decline of pollinators such as bees, for example, imperils the very crops on which humanity feeds. Extinction, furthermore, is absolute and irreversible, so that every species lost represents a unique diminishment of life that no effort can ever restore.

The opposing camp, however, contends that challenges such as climate change, atmospheric pollution and the growing scarcity of fresh water are graver still. These not only threaten the survival and welfare of billions of people but are themselves principal engines of extinction, which suggests that confronting them would protect innumerable species as a matter of course.

My own conviction aligns largely with the latter view. The loss of species, tragic though it undeniably is, tends to be a symptom of these deeper disorders rather than an independent affliction. Prioritising the underlying drivers, above all climate change and pollution, would therefore safeguard human and non-human life simultaneously. In conclusion, while the preservation of biodiversity is of profound importance, the central environmental task is to address the forces that are driving that biodiversity towards ruin.
