Band 7 model answer

The use of animals in scientific experiments remains a deeply contentious issue. Some maintain that such experiments are essential to medical research, while others insist they should be prohibited altogether. This essay will consider both views before presenting my own opinion.

Supporters of animal testing advance a powerful argument centred on human health. Before new medicines and treatments can be given to people, they must be tested for safety, and animals provide a way of identifying dangerous side effects that might otherwise harm or kill human patients. Thanks to such research, cures have been discovered for many grave diseases, saving countless lives. From this perspective, the wellbeing of human beings must take precedence over the discomfort of laboratory animals.

Opponents, however, regard the practice as cruel and unjustifiable. Animals frequently endure pain and distress during experiments, and many die as a result, yet they can neither consent nor refuse, which strikes critics as fundamentally unfair. Some also point out that advances in technology, such as sophisticated computer models, can increasingly replace animals in testing, making at least some experiments unnecessary. Those who favour a ban argue that these alternatives should always be tried first.

In my opinion, animal experiments remain justified for genuinely important medical research, but only where no viable alternative exists. Scientists have a clear duty to treat animals humanely and to adopt substitute methods whenever they can. Overall, although both arguments are strong, I believe animal testing can be accepted when it serves to save human lives, provided that the suffering it causes is minimised as far as possible.
