Band 8 model answer

Few scientific practices arouse as much moral disquiet as the use of animals in experiments. Some hold that such research is indispensable to medical progress, while others demand its outright prohibition. This essay will examine both positions before advancing my own view.

Those who defend animal testing rest their case on the primacy of human health. Novel medicines and therapies must be proven safe before they can be administered to people, and experiments on animals offer a means of detecting dangerous effects that might otherwise imperil human patients. Research of this kind has yielded cures for numerous grievous diseases and has, on any honest reckoning, saved millions of lives. On this view, human welfare must outweigh the discomfort inflicted on laboratory animals.

The abolitionist camp, however, condemns the practice as inherently cruel. Animals routinely suffer pain and fear in the course of experiments, and many perish, yet, unlike human volunteers, they are incapable of consent, a fact that many find morally decisive. Critics further observe that emerging technologies, notably advanced computer modelling, can increasingly substitute for animals, rendering a proportion of such testing superfluous.

My own position occupies a considered middle ground. Animal experimentation remains defensible for genuinely vital medical research, but only as a last resort where no alternative will serve, and scientists bear an unambiguous obligation to treat their subjects humanely and to embrace substitute methods wherever feasible. In conclusion, though both arguments are formidable, I believe animal testing can be justified when it demonstrably saves human lives, on the strict condition that the suffering involved is reduced to the barest minimum.
