Band 6 model answer

In many cities around the world, the price of housing has become very high, and a lot of people cannot afford a good home. In this essay I will explain the causes of this problem and suggest some solutions that governments can provide.

There are several causes of expensive housing. Firstly, many people move from the countryside to the big cities to find work, so there are too many people and not enough houses. When the demand is high and the supply is low, the prices go up. Secondly, some rich people and companies buy many houses only to make money, not to live in them, and this also increases the prices. In addition, in some cities there is not enough space to build new homes. When there are not enough homes for everyone, landlords can also increase the rent very easily.

Fortunately, governments can do several things to solve this problem. Firstly, the government can build more affordable houses, especially for people with low income, so everybody has a chance to have a home. Secondly, the government can put higher taxes on people who buy many houses only for investment, so there are more homes for normal families. Furthermore, developing smaller towns can reduce the pressure on the big cities.

In conclusion, housing is becoming too expensive because of high demand, investment buying and a lack of space. However, if governments build more affordable homes, control investment and develop other areas, I believe this serious problem can be reduced and more people can find a good home.
