Band 7 model answer

In many cities across the world, housing has become prohibitively expensive, leaving large numbers of people unable to afford a decent home. This essay will explore the causes of this problem before suggesting solutions that governments could provide.

Several factors lie behind soaring house prices. The most fundamental is the imbalance between supply and demand: as people migrate from rural areas to cities in search of work, the population swells while the number of available homes fails to keep pace, and prices inevitably rise. A second cause is speculative buying, whereby wealthy individuals and companies purchase multiple properties purely as investments rather than to live in, further reducing supply and inflating prices. In many densely built cities, moreover, there is simply insufficient land on which to construct new housing.

Fortunately, governments have several tools at their disposal. The most direct is to build more affordable housing, particularly for low-income families, so that everyone has a realistic chance of securing a home. Governments could also impose higher taxes on those who buy properties solely for investment, discouraging speculation and freeing up homes for ordinary residents. In addition, developing smaller towns and improving their facilities would relieve some of the pressure on overcrowded cities.

In conclusion, the high cost of housing stems chiefly from excessive demand, speculative investment and a shortage of land. Through a combination of building affordable homes, curbing speculation and developing alternative areas, however, governments could significantly ease this pressing problem and help far more people to find somewhere to live.
