Band 7 model answer

When choosing a course of study at university, students face a difficult decision. Some argue that they should select subjects useful for the job market, while others believe they should study what they genuinely enjoy. This essay will consider both views before giving my own opinion.

There is a strong practical case for choosing a marketable subject. After graduating, most students need to find employment in order to support themselves, and degrees in fields such as engineering, medicine or computer science offer far better job prospects than many others. Choosing such a subject can therefore lead to greater financial security and a smoother start to one's career. Moreover, societies genuinely need the doctors, engineers and technology specialists that these disciplines produce, so this choice benefits the country as well as the individual.

On the other hand, studying a subject one loves has considerable merit. A student who is passionate about their field is likely to be more motivated, to work harder and to achieve better results than one who studies purely for money. Spending several years on a subject one finds tedious can be dispiriting, and people who ultimately work in a field they love tend to be happier and more fulfilled.

In my opinion, the ideal is to strike a balance between the two. Students should certainly bear the job market in mind, but they should also choose something that genuinely interests them, since both financial stability and personal satisfaction matter. Overall, considering usefulness is sensible, but students should not entirely disregard their own passions and talents.
