Band 8 model answer

The proliferation of the internet has prompted some to declare public libraries obsolete, while others insist they remain indispensable. This essay will consider both perspectives before advancing my own view.

The sceptical case is not without foundation. The internet has revolutionised access to information, enabling people to read books, news and scholarship online and to retrieve almost any fact within seconds from a device in their pocket. In light of such convenience, it is tempting to conclude that libraries have outlived their usefulness and that the substantial sums devoted to them might be redirected towards more pressing needs.

I am, however, firmly persuaded that this view is mistaken. In the first place, home internet access is far from universal, and for the poor, the elderly and the marginalised, the public library remains a crucial gateway to books, technology and knowledge they could not otherwise obtain, guarding against a widening digital divide. Beyond this, a library is emphatically more than a store of books: it furnishes a quiet sanctuary for study, hosts educational classes and community gatherings, and lends a vast array of resources without charge. Many readers, moreover, continue to prize the tactile pleasure of a printed page over the glare of a screen.

In my opinion, therefore, however powerful the internet has become, public libraries remain genuinely necessary, both as a lifeline for those without digital access and as enduring hubs of learning and community. Far from being rivals, libraries and the internet can complement one another, and I believe the former should continue to occupy an honoured place in the life of society.
