Band 7 model answer

The internet has made a vast quantity of information available, but some of it is genuinely harmful. This has led some to argue that governments should censor harmful online content, while others fear such censorship threatens freedom of speech. This essay will examine both views before giving my opinion.

There is a serious case for some degree of censorship. The internet hosts a great deal of dangerous material, from graphic violence and misinformation to content that encourages people to harm themselves or others. Such material can be especially damaging to children, who may stumble upon it with ease. By removing the most dangerous content, governments could protect vulnerable people and limit the spread of harmful ideas, and for this reason many regard a measure of regulation as essential to public safety.

On the other hand, critics warn that censorship endangers a fundamental freedom. People have the right to express their opinions and share information openly, even when the authorities disapprove, and if a government controls the internet too tightly, it may also suppress inconvenient truths and silence legitimate criticism of those in power. This is a genuine danger, since unchecked censorship can pave the way to an unjust and repressive society.

In my opinion, some censorship is justified, but it must be strictly limited. Governments should remove content that is truly dangerous, such as incitements to violence or material that harms children, while leaving ordinary opinions, debate and news untouched. Overall, I believe the protection of citizens and the protection of free speech must be balanced with great care.
