Band 7 model answer

Food lies at the heart of every culture, and its evolution provokes debate. Some worry that traditional cuisine is being lost, while others welcome new food trends as a positive development. This essay will consider both views before giving my opinion.

There is real cause for concern about the decline of traditional food. Globalisation has spread fast-food chains and foreign cuisine across the world, and many young people now favour these over the traditional dishes of their own country. The frantic pace of modern life compounds the problem, since people increasingly lack the time to prepare traditional recipes, which are often elaborate and time-consuming. As a consequence, cherished dishes are gradually forgotten, representing a genuine loss to cultural heritage.

On the other hand, new food trends bring undeniable benefits. Sampling the cuisine of other countries broadens people's horizons and enriches their diets with greater variety and interest. Many contemporary trends also promote healthier eating, emphasising vegetables and reducing sugar, which is good for public health. Moreover, blending traditional and modern influences can give rise to exciting and delicious new dishes. Such fusion suggests that tradition and innovation need not be enemies at all.

In my opinion, both perspectives hold some truth. New food trends are positive in that they introduce variety and fresh ideas, yet we should not allow our traditional cuisine, an important part of cultural identity, to fade away. Overall, I believe it is entirely possible for people to embrace new culinary trends while also keeping their traditional dishes alive, enjoying the best of both.
