Band 7 model answer

The spread of misleading content online has made the ability to distinguish fact from fiction an essential skill for young people. While some argue that this should be taught in schools, others insist it is primarily the duty of parents. This essay will examine both positions before concluding that the responsibility is best shared.

There is a strong case for placing this task in the hands of schools. Teachers are trained to deliver information systematically, and a classroom allows children to practise evaluating sources, comparing headlines and spotting bias in a structured way. Crucially, because education is universal, teaching media literacy in schools ensures that every child acquires these skills, regardless of whether their family is confident with technology. This helps to prevent a divide between digitally aware households and those that are not.

Nevertheless, parents clearly have an important role to play. They observe their children's online habits on a daily basis and can intervene the moment a child encounters something questionable. Guidance given at home also tends to be more personal and immediate than a general lesson, and children often absorb attitudes by imitating the adults around them.

In my opinion, framing this as a choice between school and home is unhelpful. Schools are well placed to teach the underlying principles to all pupils, while parents reinforce and personalise them through everyday conversation. Overall, given how quickly false information now travels, equipping children to assess it reliably requires a genuine partnership between teachers and families rather than the effort of either one acting alone.
