Some people believe that spending public money on sport is a waste, while other people think that sport brings important benefits to the society. In this essay I will discuss both opinions and give my view.
On one hand, I understand why some people think sport is a waste of money. Governments have limited budget, and there are many serious problems such as health care, education and poverty. If a country spend a lot of money to build big stadiums or to organise expensive events, maybe this money is not used for more important things. Sometimes a stadium is used only for a short time, and after that it becomes empty, so it is not a good use of money.
On the other hand, sport also has many good benefits. When the government supports sport, more people can do exercise, and this make them healthier and reduce the cost of hospitals in the future. Sport is also good for the children because it teach them teamwork and discipline. In addition, big sport events like the Olympics can bring people together and make the country famous around the world. These events also give young people famous athletes that they can look up to.
In my opinion, sport is not a waste of money if it is spent in the right way. I think the government should spend the money on local sport facilities that normal people can use every day, instead of very expensive events. In conclusion, sport has both advantages and disadvantages, but with careful planning it gives real benefits to the society and to the health of the people.
