Band 7 model answer

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence have prompted a lively debate about its impact on employment. While some believe AI will generate more jobs than it eliminates, others fear it will lead to widespread unemployment. This essay will examine both positions before offering my own view.

Optimists argue that technological change has historically created more work than it has destroyed. Each major innovation, from the assembly line to the personal computer, ultimately opened up entirely new industries and occupations. AI is likely to follow the same pattern, generating demand for engineers, data specialists and technicians, while relieving human workers of repetitive or hazardous tasks so they can focus on more creative and rewarding roles. On this view, the technology should expand the economy rather than shrink it.

Pessimists, however, point to the unusual breadth of AI's capabilities. Unlike earlier machines, it can already perform tasks once thought to require human judgement, threatening drivers, factory operatives and even white-collar staff. The concern is that jobs may disappear faster than displaced workers can retrain, and that those with limited education will be hit hardest, deepening inequality. Such a rapid transition could leave entire communities without a stable source of income.

In my opinion, both outcomes are likely to occur simultaneously, and the net result will depend on how societies respond. AI will certainly destroy some roles while creating others, so the decisive factor is whether governments and employers invest seriously in retraining. Overall, I believe AI need not cause mass unemployment, provided workers are actively supported in acquiring the skills that the new economy will demand.
