一些专家认为,孩子在小学而不是中学开始学习外语更好。这种做法的优点是否大于缺点?

Band 7 model answer

The question of when children should begin learning a foreign language has attracted growing attention, with many experts recommending primary rather than secondary school. In my view, although an early start brings certain difficulties, its advantages clearly outweigh them.

The benefits of learning a language young are well established. Children's brains are especially receptive to new sounds, which means that those who start early typically achieve a more natural pronunciation than learners who begin as teenagers. Because young children acquire language almost intuitively, much as they do their mother tongue, the process feels less like study and more like play. An early start also lengthens the period of exposure, so pupils accumulate far more practice and can reach an advanced level by the time they leave school. Beyond linguistic gains, early contact with another language fosters cultural awareness and open-mindedness.

There are, admittedly, some drawbacks. Very young children are still consolidating their first language, and a second one may briefly cause confusion. Moreover, primary schools do not always have adequately trained language teachers, and adding another subject to an already full timetable can place extra pressure on young learners. Without careful planning, an early start could therefore achieve less than its supporters hope.

These concerns, however, are largely practical and can be addressed through better teacher training and engaging, age-appropriate methods. On balance, the lasting advantages of superior pronunciation, greater fluency and broader cultural understanding far exceed the temporary difficulties. I therefore firmly believe that introducing foreign languages at primary school is thoroughly worthwhile.
