Museums are important places where people can learn about history, art and science. In some countries the museums are free, but in others they charge money for the entry. In my opinion, the disadvantages of charging are bigger than the advantages, although charging also has some good points.
There are a few advantages when a museum charges for the ticket. The money can be used to take care of the building and to protect the old objects, which are sometimes very expensive to keep in good condition. The museum can also use this money to organise new exhibitions and hire more staff. If a museum does not have enough money, maybe it will close, so the entry fee can help it to survive. Without this money, some important museums might have to sell their objects or reduce their opening hours.
However, I think there are more disadvantages. The biggest problem is that a ticket price stop many people from visiting, especially poor families, students and children. Museums should be a place of education for everybody, not only for people who have money. When the entry is free, more people come and they learn many useful things about their culture and history. This is good for the whole society.
In conclusion, although charging for museums helps to pay for the costs, I believe the disadvantages are more serious because it reduces the number of visitors and makes education less equal. Therefore, I think governments should try to keep museums free and support them with public money.
