Some people think homesickness is a positive thing. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

有人认为思乡是一种积极的情感。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 7 model answer

When people move away from home to study or work elsewhere, they commonly experience homesickness, and some argue that this feeling is in fact a positive one. I partly agree with this view, since homesickness has both beneficial and harmful aspects.

There are certainly grounds for regarding it favourably. Missing one's family and familiar surroundings is a sign of strong, loving relationships, which are valuable in themselves. Homesickness also tends to deepen people's appreciation of home, for it is often only at a distance that we recognise how much our family and origins mean to us. Perhaps most importantly, learning to cope with the discomfort of being away fosters resilience and independence, since young people are compelled to manage difficulties on their own rather than relying on others.

On the other hand, homesickness can be genuinely damaging. When the feeling becomes overwhelming, it may lead to sadness, loneliness and even depression. Students in particular sometimes find themselves unable to concentrate, so preoccupied with home that their studies suffer, and a few abandon valuable opportunities altogether in order to return. Such decisions can have lasting consequences for their education and future careers.

In my opinion, homesickness is a natural emotion that can be positive provided it remains moderate. It encourages people to value their families and to grow more self-reliant, but it becomes harmful once it starts to dominate their thoughts. Overall, I partly agree that homesickness is a positive thing, yet I believe individuals must learn to manage it so that it strengthens rather than undermines them.
