Band 7 model answer

In many parts of the world, children commonly undertake some form of paid work, from delivering newspapers to assisting in a family business. While some regard this as a positive experience, others consider it fundamentally wrong. This essay will examine both views before giving my own opinion.

There are genuine benefits to be found in children working. To begin with, a modest job can teach valuable lessons in responsibility, punctuality and cooperation, qualities that will serve young people well throughout their lives. Earning their own money also helps children to grasp its value and to spend it more thoughtfully, while the sense of contributing and of independence can boost their confidence and maturity. For many, a first job is a formative and largely positive experience.

On the other hand, the objections are serious. The chief concern is that work may encroach on schooling: a child who is tired from a job has less time and energy for study, and academic performance can suffer as a result. Far graver still is the situation in some poorer countries, where children are compelled to perform arduous or hazardous labour that damages their health and robs them of a proper childhood. Children need time to rest and to play, not merely to work.

In my opinion, light and safe work can be beneficial provided it never interferes with a child's education or wellbeing, whereas dangerous or exploitative labour must be firmly prohibited. Overall, children's paid work is neither wholly good nor wholly bad; what matters most is that their studies and their health are properly protected.
