Band 8 model answer

Across much of the world it is unremarkable for children to engage in some form of paid work, whether delivering newspapers or lending a hand in a family enterprise. Opinion divides sharply between those who welcome this as beneficial and those who condemn it as wrong. This essay will weigh both perspectives before setting out my own position.

The case in favour is not without substance. A modest job can instil in children a sense of responsibility, punctuality and the art of working alongside others, dispositions that prove invaluable in adult life. Earning money of their own likewise teaches them its worth and encourages more considered spending, while the accompanying feelings of usefulness and independence can nurture confidence and maturity. Viewed thus, an early job is often a formative and positive rite of passage.

The counter-arguments, however, carry considerable moral weight. The foremost concern is that employment may erode education, for a child drained by work has neither the time nor the energy that serious study demands, and grades frequently suffer accordingly. More disturbing by far is the plight of children in some developing nations who are driven into gruelling or perilous labour that imperils their health and strips them of childhood itself, a reality no economic argument can excuse.

My own view is that these considerations point towards a clear distinction. Light, safe and limited work can be genuinely valuable so long as it never compromises a child's schooling or welfare, whereas hazardous or exploitative labour must be prohibited outright. Ultimately, children's work is defensible only where their education and wellbeing remain paramount.
