Band 7 model answer

It is often argued that creative artists, whether writers, painters or musicians, should always be free to express their own ideas. I largely agree with this view, although I believe that a small number of limits remain necessary.

The arguments for artistic freedom are powerful. Art exists, above all, to explore new ideas and perspectives, and in doing so it enriches society and keeps its culture vibrant and diverse. Artists deprived of freedom cannot truly create, and the result would be a bland, monotonous culture in which nothing original could emerge. Freedom of expression is, moreover, a fundamental human right, and artists should be able to address contentious subjects such as politics, religion and social injustice, even when this makes people uncomfortable. Throughout history, indeed, works that challenged those in power have helped to bring about important and positive change.

That said, I do not believe this freedom can be entirely without boundaries. Art that incites violence, spreads hatred or promotes racism against particular groups causes real harm and cannot be justified in the name of self-expression. Similarly, material that is genuinely damaging to children should be subject to reasonable restriction. Such limits protect the public without silencing genuine artistic expression.

In my opinion, therefore, artists deserve a very wide degree of freedom, because such freedom is vital to both culture and society, but it should stop short of endangering or degrading others. Overall, I agree that creative artists should be free to express their ideas, provided that this freedom is not used to cause serious harm.
