创意艺术家应始终自由地通过文字、图像、音乐或电影表达自己的想法。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 8 model answer

The proposition that creative artists should always be at liberty to express their own ideas is one with which I broadly agree, though I would argue that a narrow set of limits remains indispensable.

The case for artistic freedom is formidable. Art's very purpose is to probe unfamiliar ideas and perspectives, and in doing so it enlivens culture and broadens the collective imagination. An artist forbidden to think freely cannot genuinely create, and a society that muzzles its artists condemns itself to a sterile, homogeneous culture in which nothing challenging or original can flourish. Freedom of expression is, besides, a foundational right, and artists must be permitted to confront thorny questions of politics, faith and social injustice, however uncomfortable that may prove. History bears eloquent witness to this: countless works that dared to indict the powerful have catalysed reform and enlarged human liberty.

Even so, I cannot regard this freedom as wholly unbounded. Art that incites violence, disseminates hatred or vilifies entire communities inflicts tangible harm, and no appeal to creative licence can legitimise it; likewise, material genuinely injurious to children warrants sensible restriction. Such limits, crucially, target demonstrable harm rather than mere offence.

In my view, then, artists should enjoy an expansive freedom to voice their ideas, since that freedom is integral to the vitality of both culture and society, yet it should halt at the point where it endangers or degrades others. I therefore agree that creative artists ought to be free to express themselves, on the sole condition that this liberty is not turned into an instrument of serious harm.
