How far children should defer to their parents is a question every family confronts. Some maintain that children ought always to follow their parents' advice, while others believe they should be free to make their own decisions. This essay will consider both views before offering my own opinion.
There is much to be said for heeding parental guidance. Parents possess a wealth of life experience that their children necessarily lack, and are therefore often better placed to distinguish wise choices from dangerous ones, whether in matters of health, study or friendship. Because parents genuinely want the best for their children, their counsel is usually honest and well-intentioned, and a child who follows it may be spared many painful mistakes.
On the other hand, unquestioning obedience carries its own risks. Children who always do as they are told may never learn to think independently and can grow excessively reliant on others. Making one's own decisions, by contrast, and even occasionally getting them wrong, teaches valuable lessons and builds the confidence and self-reliance that adulthood demands. Children are also distinct individuals, whose ambitions and temperaments may differ markedly from those of their parents.
In my opinion, the wisest course lies between these extremes. Young children, lacking experience, should generally follow their parents' advice, but as they mature they ought to be granted increasing freedom to choose for themselves. Overall, children need both the security of parental guidance and the opportunity to make their own decisions, so that they can grow into capable and independent adults.
