In recent years, some people have suggested that employees should work a shorter week, for example four days instead of five. Some people support this idea, while others believe it would harm productivity. In this essay I will discuss both views and give my opinion.
On one hand, there are good reasons for a shorter working week. Firstly, when people work less, they have more time to rest and to spend with their family, so they feel happier and less stressed. A happy worker is often more motivated and makes fewer mistakes. Secondly, a shorter week can also be good for health, because many people today suffer from stress and tiredness because of too much work. In addition, workers would have more time for hobbies and exercise, which improves their quality of life.
On the other hand, some people worry that a shorter week would reduce productivity. If employees work fewer hours, maybe the company cannot finish all the work, and it must hire more people, which costs more money. Some businesses, like hospitals and factories, need workers all the time, so a shorter week is difficult for them. There is also a fear that the salary will become lower.
In my opinion, a shorter working week is a good idea for many jobs, because a rested worker is usually more productive in less time. However, it is not suitable for every industry. In conclusion, both sides have strong points, but I believe that, where it is possible, a shorter week would improve both wellbeing and work.
