Band 7 model answer

In recent years, the idea that employees should work a shorter week, perhaps four days rather than five, has gained increasing attention. While some enthusiastically support it, others fear it would damage productivity. This essay will examine both views before giving my opinion.

There are persuasive arguments in favour of a shorter working week. Most obviously, working fewer hours would give people more time to rest and to be with their families, reducing the stress and exhaustion from which so many now suffer. A well-rested, contented workforce tends to be more motivated and to make fewer mistakes, so wellbeing and performance may actually reinforce one another. Additional free time for exercise, hobbies and recovery would further improve employees' health and overall quality of life.

On the other hand, critics warn of a decline in output. If staff work fewer hours, some firms may struggle to complete their workload and be forced to hire additional employees, raising costs. Certain sectors, such as healthcare and manufacturing, require continuous staffing and cannot easily adopt such a model, and there is also concern that shorter hours might lead to reduced wages.

In my opinion, a shorter working week is a promising idea for many kinds of employment, since a rested worker often accomplishes as much in four days as in five. It cannot, however, be applied universally. Overall, both positions have merit, but I believe that, wherever it is practical, a shorter week would benefit employees and employers alike by improving both wellbeing and efficiency.
