Band 8 model answer

The proposal that employees should work a shorter week, four days in place of the traditional five, has moved from the fringes of debate towards the mainstream. Its advocates are enthusiastic, while its critics fear a collapse in productivity. This essay will weigh both positions before offering my own view.

The case for a compressed week is compelling. Fewer working hours would grant people more time to rest and to devote to their families, alleviating the stress and chronic fatigue that blight so much of modern working life. A refreshed and contented workforce is characteristically more motivated and less error-prone, so that wellbeing and performance, far from being opposed, may prove mutually reinforcing. The additional scope for exercise, leisure and genuine recuperation would enhance employees' health and their quality of life more broadly still.

The sceptics, however, raise legitimate concerns. Should staff work fewer hours, some organisations might fail to complete their workload and be obliged to recruit additional employees, driving up costs, while sectors demanding round-the-clock cover, healthcare and manufacturing among them, could scarcely accommodate the change. The spectre of reduced wages further complicates the picture.

My own view is that a shorter week holds real promise for a great many occupations, since a well-rested employee frequently achieves in four days what an exhausted one manages in five. It is not, however, a universal remedy, and its feasibility varies markedly by industry. On balance, both arguments carry weight, but I am persuaded that, wherever circumstances permit, a shorter working week would serve employees and employers alike by lifting wellbeing and efficiency together.
