Band 8 model answer

That education is of the utmost importance is beyond dispute, yet how best to improve it provokes considerable disagreement. Some contend that the decisive step is to raise teachers' salaries, while others insist that superior methods exist. This essay will examine both positions before advancing my own view.

The argument for higher pay is far from trivial. Teaching is an exacting and socially indispensable profession, and yet in many countries it is meagrely rewarded, with the predictable consequence that gifted graduates gravitate towards more lucrative fields and schools are left struggling to recruit. Better salaries would draw more capable individuals into teaching and would revitalise the morale of those already in post, both of which stand to enhance the quality of instruction that pupils receive.

The opposing camp, however, cautions that remuneration alone is no panacea. Shrinking class sizes, modernising school buildings and furnishing classrooms with ample books, computers and equipment could all yield substantial gains, while investment in teacher training may matter most of all, since accomplished pedagogy can benefit students even more than a heftier pay packet. As critics observe, raising salaries will accomplish little if the surrounding system remains dysfunctional.

In my opinion, higher teacher pay is genuinely important but should never be mistaken for a complete solution. Improving education is an intricate, multi-faceted endeavour, and I am convinced that competitive salaries, smaller classes and rigorous training must advance in concert. Only such a comprehensive approach, rather than any single lever pulled in isolation, is likely to produce the lasting improvement that education demands.
