Band 6 model answer

Some people believe that governments should spend more money on scientific research, while others think that there are more urgent needs. In this essay I will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On one hand, there are strong reasons to spend more on science. Scientific research helps a country to develop and to solve big problems. For example, science gives us new medicines, better technology and cleaner energy. Many important things in our modern life, like vaccines and the internet, came from research. If a government does not invest in science, the country will be weaker and will depend on other countries for new technology. So investing in research is important for the future.

On the other hand, some people think there are more urgent needs. In many countries, there are serious problems right now, such as poverty, hunger, and a lack of hospitals and schools. These people say that it is better to spend money to help the citizens today, instead of spending it on research that maybe gives results only after many years. Poor people need food and medical care now, not in the future.

In my opinion, both science and the urgent needs are important, and the government should find a good balance. It should spend enough money to solve the immediate problems, but it should also invest in research, because science can solve many problems in the long term. In conclusion, a wise government should not choose only one; it should support both at the same time.
