Band 7 model answer

In many countries, the population is steadily ageing, as people live longer and birth rates decline. This demographic shift gives rise to a number of serious problems. This essay will outline these difficulties before suggesting possible solutions.

An ageing population presents several challenges. The most pressing is economic: as the proportion of elderly people grows and the number of working-age citizens shrinks, it becomes increasingly difficult to fund the pensions and healthcare that older people require, since fewer workers are paying the taxes on which these depend. The strain on healthcare is a related problem, as elderly people tend to need more medical treatment, leaving hospitals overstretched. There is also a social dimension, for many older people live alone and suffer from loneliness when their families are busy or far away, and this isolation can seriously harm their mental and physical health.

Fortunately, a range of solutions exists. Governments could encourage higher birth rates by offering financial incentives and better support to families with children. Permitting more young immigrants to settle and work would also help to maintain a sufficient workforce and tax base. In addition, investing in care homes and healthcare services for the elderly, and allowing those who wish to keep working beyond the usual retirement age to do so, would ease both the financial and the social pressures.

In conclusion, an ageing population brings problems including rising costs, overburdened hospitals and loneliness. Through support for families, controlled immigration and improved services for the elderly, however, I believe these challenges can be managed effectively.
