Band 8 model answer

In country after country, populations are growing steadily older as lifespans lengthen and birth rates fall. This demographic transformation carries with it a series of formidable problems. This essay will examine these difficulties before proposing a number of remedies.

The challenges posed by an ageing society are considerable. Foremost among them is the economic burden: as the elderly swell in number while the working-age population contracts, funding the pensions and medical care that older citizens depend upon grows ever harder, for there are proportionately fewer workers whose taxes sustain these systems. Closely linked is the mounting pressure on healthcare, since the elderly typically require more frequent and more intensive treatment, straining hospitals to their limits. A quieter but genuine social problem accompanies these, as many older people, their families preoccupied or distant, endure isolation and loneliness.

A variety of solutions, encouragingly, present themselves. Governments might raise birth rates by offering financial incentives and robust support to families, from childcare to parental leave. Admitting more young immigrants to live and work would likewise replenish the workforce and broaden the tax base. Beyond this, expanding care homes and geriatric services, together with enabling those who wish to work past the conventional retirement age to continue, would relieve both the fiscal and the emotional strains simultaneously.

In conclusion, an ageing population generates problems ranging from soaring costs and overburdened hospitals to widespread loneliness. Yet none is insurmountable. Through determined support for families, sensible immigration and better provision for the elderly, societies can, I am convinced, navigate this transition and turn a daunting challenge into a manageable one.
