Band 7 model answer

Tourism is a major industry in many parts of the world. Some regard it as an excellent means of boosting the local economy, while others argue that it creates problems for local residents. This essay will consider both views before giving my opinion.

There is no doubt that tourism can bring substantial economic benefits. Visitors spend money on accommodation, restaurants, transport and shopping, injecting revenue that helps local businesses to thrive. Tourism also generates a great deal of employment, from tour guides and drivers to cooks and hotel staff, and in poorer regions this income can be vital, lifting the living standards of many families. In this sense, a thriving tourist trade can significantly enrich an area.

On the other hand, the drawbacks for residents are real. When a destination attracts too many visitors, it can become overcrowded and noisy, with increased traffic and pollution. Rising demand often pushes up the price of housing and everyday goods, making life more expensive for locals. Furthermore, tourists do not always respect local customs, and the traditional way of life can be eroded or commercialised as a result.

In my opinion, tourism is on balance beneficial because of the income and employment it provides, but its negative effects must be carefully managed. Governments should regulate the number of visitors to the most popular sites and take steps to protect both the environment and local culture. Overall, tourism can genuinely strengthen local economies, provided it is developed responsibly and with the interests of residents firmly in mind.
