Band 8 model answer

Tourism ranks among the most important industries in many parts of the world. Some celebrate it as a powerful engine of local economic growth, while others contend that it inflicts real harm on the communities that host it. This essay will weigh both perspectives before setting out my own view.

The economic benefits of tourism are difficult to deny. Visitors spend freely on accommodation, dining, transport and shopping, channelling revenue that allows local enterprises to flourish, while the industry generates abundant employment, from guides and drivers to chefs and hotel staff. In less prosperous regions especially, this income can be transformative, raising the living standards of families for whom few other opportunities exist. A flourishing tourist trade can, in short, enrich an entire locality.

Yet the costs borne by residents are equally tangible. Destinations overwhelmed by visitors grow congested and noisy, beset by heavier traffic and mounting pollution, and the surge in demand frequently inflates the price of housing and daily necessities, squeezing the very locals the industry is said to benefit. More insidiously, an unrelenting influx of outsiders can erode traditional customs, reducing a living culture to a commercialised spectacle staged for paying guests.

In my opinion, tourism is, on balance, a positive force, given the income and employment it delivers, but its harms are serious enough to demand active management. Governments should cap visitor numbers at the most fragile and popular sites and act deliberately to protect the environment and cultural heritage. Handled with such foresight, tourism can strengthen local economies without hollowing out the communities on which it ultimately depends.
