Band 6 model answer

In many countries, people eat too much unhealthy food, and this cause health problems like obesity. Some people think the government should put a tax on unhealthy food to make people healthier. Other people think that everyone should choose their own food by themselves. I will look at both sides in this essay.

Firstly, there are some good reasons to tax unhealthy food. When the junk food becomes more expensive, some people will buy less of it, and maybe they will choose more healthy options instead. This can reduce diseases, and also the money from the tax can be used for hospitals. In some countries, a tax on sugar drinks already helped to lower the consumption. So a tax can protect the health of the society.

However, other people do not agree with this idea. They say that people are adults and they have the right to decide what do they eat. It is not the job of the government to control our food. Also, a tax is not fair for poor people, because they will pay more money but rich people do not care about the price. Some people also think that education is better than a tax.

In my opinion, I partly agree with the tax. I think the government can put a tax on very unhealthy products like sugary drinks, but at the same time it should teach people about healthy eating. In conclusion, taxing unhealthy food has both advantages and disadvantages, but if it is used together with education, it can help to improve public health.
