Band 7 model answer

Rising rates of diet-related illness have led some to argue that governments should tax unhealthy food in order to protect public health, while others maintain that individuals should be free to make their own dietary choices. This essay will consider both arguments before giving my own view.

Supporters of taxation point to its potential to change behaviour. When products high in sugar or fat become noticeably more expensive, consumers tend to buy less of them, and the revenue raised can be reinvested in healthcare or public awareness campaigns. The sugar taxes introduced in several countries have reportedly reduced the sale of soft drinks, which suggests that price is an effective lever. From this perspective, a modest tax is a reasonable tool for tackling a costly public health crisis.

On the other hand, opponents raise valid objections. They argue that adults have the right to decide what they eat and that the state should not interfere in such personal matters. There is also a question of fairness, since a flat tax hits low-income households hardest while barely affecting wealthier consumers who can easily absorb the extra cost. Critics further contend that education is a more constructive solution than punishment.

In my opinion, taxation can be justified, but only as part of a broader strategy. Governments are entitled to discourage the most harmful products, such as sugary drinks, yet this should be paired with clear food labelling and education so that people can make genuinely informed choices. Overall, a well-designed tax combined with education is more likely to improve public health than either measure applied on its own.
