Band 7 model answer

In the digital age, companies routinely track our online activity, and many users accept this in return for a more convenient experience. Others, however, believe that privacy should take priority. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

Those who tolerate tracking emphasise the benefits it brings. When services understand a user's preferences, they can tailor recommendations, streamline searches and remove much of the friction from everyday tasks. A shopping platform can suggest genuinely relevant products, while a navigation app can offer quicker routes based on past behaviour. For many people, sharing a certain amount of data is a reasonable price to pay for services that are both free and increasingly personalised.

On the other hand, privacy advocates warn of serious risks. They are uncomfortable with the sheer volume of information companies gather about individuals' locations, purchases and habits. This data may be sold to third parties without meaningful consent or exposed in security breaches, leaving users vulnerable to fraud and manipulation. Once personal information is lost, control over it can rarely be regained. In extreme cases, leaked data has even been used to target people with scams and misleading advertising.

In my opinion, convenience and privacy need not be entirely opposed, but the balance currently favours corporations too heavily. A degree of tracking is acceptable provided that companies are transparent about what they collect and obtain genuine consent. Above all, governments should enforce robust data-protection laws. Overall, while the convenience of personalised services is real, it should never come at the expense of individuals' fundamental right to control their own information.
