Scarcely a moment passes online without our behaviour being recorded, and society remains divided over whether this is a fair bargain. Many willingly accept tracking for the convenience it delivers, while others contend that privacy is too precious to barter. Having considered both positions, I believe the convenience is genuine but has been allowed to eclipse privacy to an unhealthy degree.
The pragmatic case for tracking is not difficult to appreciate. When platforms understand our preferences, they can anticipate our needs, filter out irrelevance and spare us countless small frustrations. Personalised recommendations, predictive search and location-aware services all depend on data, and for a great many users the surrender of some information seems a modest price for tools that are sophisticated, responsive and, crucially, free at the point of use.
Yet the objections of privacy advocates are weighty and, I would argue, insufficiently heeded. The scale of modern data collection extends far beyond what most users imagine, encompassing their movements, purchases and even their moods. Such information is frequently traded between companies without informed consent or exposed in breaches, leaving individuals open to fraud, discrimination and subtle manipulation of their choices. Unlike a stolen possession, forfeited privacy can almost never be recovered.
My conclusion is that the two values can coexist, but only under firm regulation. Tracking is defensible where it is transparent, proportionate and genuinely consented to, yet the present arrangement tilts overwhelmingly towards commercial interests. Robust, well-enforced data-protection law is therefore essential, ensuring that the undeniable convenience of the digital economy is not purchased at the cost of a right people cannot afford to lose.
