Band 7 model answer

Almost everything we do online is now recorded by companies, and while many people accept this in exchange for convenience, others insist that privacy matters more. This essay will examine both positions before presenting my own view.

Supporters of tracking highlight the smoother experience it makes possible. When a platform understands a user's tastes, it can recommend relevant products, remember preferences and remove much of the effort from everyday tasks. Streaming services suggest films the viewer is likely to enjoy, and shopping sites highlight items that genuinely match past behaviour. For users who value speed and personalisation, surrendering a certain amount of information seems a reasonable price for services that are sophisticated and free.

Those who prioritise privacy, however, warn of consequences that reach beyond mere discomfort. Detailed profiles of individuals' movements, purchases and beliefs can be used to target them with manipulative advertising or even political messaging designed to exploit their fears. Such data is frequently sold to third parties without informed consent, and a single security breach can expose millions of people to fraud. Unlike a stolen object, lost privacy is almost impossible to restore.

In my opinion, the balance has tilted too far towards commercial interests, and privacy deserves greater protection. A limited degree of tracking is acceptable where users give clear, informed consent, but companies should be legally obliged to be transparent and to safeguard the data they hold. Overall, convenience is a genuine benefit, yet it must never be allowed to override a person's fundamental right to control their own information.
