Scarcely any online action now escapes the notice of the companies that harvest our data, and society is split over whether the convenience this yields is worth the intrusion. Some accept tracking readily; others regard privacy as too important to trade away. Having weighed both views, I believe the balance has shifted dangerously far in favour of commerce.
The pragmatic defence of tracking is easy to understand. By learning our preferences, platforms can anticipate our needs, curate relevant content and strip friction from countless routine tasks. Personalised recommendations, predictive search and tailored streaming all depend on behavioural data, and for many users the exchange feels equitable, since the resulting services are powerful, responsive and free at the point of use.
The objections of privacy advocates, however, extend well beyond inconvenience. Comprehensive profiles of a person's location, spending and beliefs can be weaponised, whether to bombard them with manipulative advertising or to deliver political propaganda engineered to exploit their anxieties. Such information is routinely traded without genuine consent and periodically spilled in breaches that expose millions to fraud and identity theft. Once forfeited, privacy is virtually impossible to reclaim.
My conclusion is that the two goods can coexist only within a robust legal framework. Tracking may be tolerated where it is transparent, proportionate and truly consensual, but the current settlement, in which vast corporations accumulate intimate data with minimal oversight, is indefensible. Firmly enforced privacy law is therefore not an obstacle to innovation but a precondition for it, ensuring that the conveniences of digital life are not bought at the price of individual autonomy.
