Band 7 model answer

Teaching children to become responsible members of society is widely regarded as essential, but opinions differ over who should take the lead. Some maintain that this is primarily the duty of parents, while others argue that schools are better suited to the task. This essay will examine both views before concluding that the responsibility should be shared.

There is a persuasive case for placing this role with parents. The family is the first environment a child experiences, and it is here that fundamental values such as honesty, respect and empathy are first absorbed. Children tend to imitate the adults closest to them, so the everyday example set by parents carries enormous weight. Because this learning happens continuously and is reinforced by close emotional bonds, the home is arguably the most natural place for it.

Nevertheless, schools offer something the home cannot. By bringing together children from many different backgrounds, they teach cooperation, tolerance and the importance of rules in a way that only a wider community can. Teachers can model good conduct and design activities that develop teamwork, and for children whose parents are absent or overburdened, school may provide guidance that would otherwise be missing.

In my opinion, framing this as a choice between home and school is mistaken. Parents are best placed to instil core values, while schools allow children to practise them among their peers. Overall, children develop into good citizens most reliably when families and schools reinforce one another rather than treating the task as belonging to either alone.
