Band 7 model answer

A growing number of people report that they struggle to get enough sleep. Since rest is vital for both physical and mental health, this is a worrying trend. This essay will outline the problems that sleep deprivation can cause and suggest ways of addressing them.

Insufficient sleep produces a range of harmful effects. In the short term, tiredness impairs concentration and slows reaction times, which becomes genuinely dangerous when a person is driving or operating machinery. Over a longer period, chronic sleep loss is associated with serious health conditions, including a weakened immune system, persistent stress and an increased risk of heart disease. Sleep deprivation also affects mood and behaviour, leaving people irritable, less productive and more prone to conflict with those around them.

Fortunately, several practical solutions exist. At an individual level, the most effective step is to establish a consistent routine by going to bed and waking at similar times each day. Avoiding screens before bed is also important, as the light they emit disrupts the body's natural rhythms, and reducing caffeine in the evening can make falling asleep easier. Employers and schools have a part to play too, since excessive workloads and pressure are a major cause of sleeplessness; setting more realistic demands would relieve much of this strain.

In conclusion, a lack of sleep threatens health, safety and emotional wellbeing, but it is far from irreversible. Through better personal habits and a more reasonable approach to work, most people could significantly improve both the quantity and the quality of their rest.
