Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause, and what can be done about it?

如今许多人抱怨睡眠不足。睡眠不足会造成什么问题?可以如何解决?

Band 8 model answer

Complaints about the inability to obtain sufficient sleep have become strikingly common, and given how fundamental rest is to human functioning, the trend deserves serious attention. This essay will examine the consequences of sleep deprivation before proposing a number of remedies.

The problems caused by inadequate sleep are both immediate and cumulative. In the short term, fatigue erodes concentration and dulls reflexes, a combination that turns routine activities such as driving into genuine hazards. Over time, the damage deepens: sustained sleep loss has been linked to weakened immunity, chronic stress and a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease. Nor are the effects confined to the body, since exhaustion frequently manifests as irritability, impaired judgement and strained relationships, quietly undermining both personal and professional life.

Addressing the issue requires action on two fronts. Individually, the single most effective measure is to cultivate a regular sleep schedule, retiring and rising at consistent times so that the body's internal clock stabilises. Limiting exposure to screens before bed is equally important, as their artificial light suppresses the hormones that induce drowsiness, while moderating caffeine intake in the latter part of the day removes a common obstacle to falling asleep. Institutions, however, must also accept responsibility, since the relentless demands of many workplaces and schools are themselves a primary driver of sleeplessness; more humane expectations would do much to ease it.

In conclusion, although insufficient sleep carries significant risks for health, safety and wellbeing, these are largely preventable. A combination of disciplined personal habits and more considerate institutional practices could restore the restful nights that so many people now lack.
