Band 7 model answer

It is often claimed that the growing use of technology has left people more socially isolated. While I acknowledge that technology can have this effect, I only partly agree, since its impact ultimately depends on how it is used.

There is certainly evidence to support the argument. Many people now spend hours absorbed in their phones, games or streaming services, often in solitude. It is increasingly common to see families sharing a room yet ignoring one another, each engrossed in a separate screen. Younger people, in particular, sometimes prefer messaging to meeting in person, and as a result may fail to develop the confidence and skills that face-to-face interaction requires. In these ways, technology can undeniably weaken real human contact.

However, the opposite effect is equally real. Social media, messaging apps and video calls allow people to maintain relationships with friends and relatives who live far away, something that would once have been difficult or impossible. During the recent pandemic, such tools were the only means by which many people could stay in touch. Technology also enables individuals who are shy or housebound to find communities of shared interest that they might never encounter offline. For such people, it can actually reduce isolation rather than deepen it.

In my opinion, therefore, technology is not inherently isolating; the crucial factor is moderation. Used excessively, it can crowd out genuine connection, but used sensibly, it enriches our social lives. Overall, I agree that technology can contribute to isolation, but only when people allow it to replace, rather than support, their real relationships.
