Some people think the increasing use of technology has made people more socially isolated. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

有人认为科技使用增加让人变得更加社会孤立。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 8 model answer

A familiar complaint about modern life is that our ever-deepening reliance on technology has rendered us more socially isolated. Although I recognise the force of this claim, I agree with it only in part, for technology's social effects depend far less on the tools themselves than on the manner of their use.

The case for the proposition is not hard to make. Vast numbers of people now pass their leisure hours alone, immersed in phones, games or streaming platforms, and the sight of a family gathered in one room yet each lost in a private screen has become emblematic of the age. Younger people especially may come to favour the frictionless ease of messaging over the demands of meeting in person, and in doing so risk neglecting the subtle skills that only face-to-face contact cultivates. To this extent, technology can plainly attenuate genuine human connection.

Yet the same technology sustains relationships that distance would otherwise sever. Video calls and social platforms enable people to remain close to friends and family scattered across the globe, and during the recent pandemic they were often the sole thread holding communities together. For the shy, the housebound or the marginalised, moreover, online spaces can offer a sense of belonging unavailable to them in the physical world.

My considered view, therefore, is that technology is neither inherently isolating nor inherently unifying; everything turns on moderation and intent. Wielded compulsively, it displaces real intimacy; wielded thoughtfully, it extends it. I concur, then, that technology can foster isolation, but only where people permit it to supplant the very relationships it was meant to serve.
